Abstract
<PICT:0976401/C6-C7/1> Iron ore and limestone is fed to a downstream preliminary reduction furnace IV of a series of cyclone furnaces with their gas flow paths in series. From the bottom outlet of the furnace IV, FeO and CaO are entrained by reducing gases from a nozzle 27 connected to the gas outlet of an upstream furnace II and fed to furnace III where sponge iron is formed. The sponge iron passes through a discharge pipe 16 to be entrained by a jet of town gas under pressure from a nozzle 12 and fed to a melting furnace I. The temperature of the effluent gases from the melting furnace is reduced and their reducing power increased by feeding carbon from hopper 22 to furnace II. Steam may be fed to furnace II to reduce the temperature of gas supplied to furnace III so that the sponge iron does not agglomerate. Carbon residues from furnace II are fed to the melting furnaces by a jet of hot air from a nozzle 7, and additional carbon from a hopper 38 may be supplied.
