The average current in a circuit is adjusted by operating on the magnetic circuit of an electromagnetic interrupter included in the circuit. For example, the electromagnet may be movable towards and away from the contact assembly, Fig. 1 (not shown) or the contact assembly may be movable, Fig. IV (not shown), or both electromagnet and contact assembly may be fixed and the adjustment provided by a movable permanent magnet, Fig. V (not shown) and Fig. VII (not shown) or by a movable flux-diverting element, Fig. IX (not shown). In another arrangement, Fig. VIII (not shown), the adjustment is provided by varying the current in the electromagnet. The interrupters may be A.C. driven or may operate by selfinterruption.
