Abstract

835,486. Crimping fibrous strands. TEXTURED YARN CO. Inc. Nov. 20, 1957 [Nov. 27,1956], No. 36155/57. Classes 120(2) and 120(3) Strands are crimped by applying to them a movable impeding force continuously and uniformly at a fixed location within a confining region into and through which the strand is passed. The invention is applicable to natural or synthetic materials in filament or staple fibre forms; multifilament nylon strands are specifically mentioned. A strand is guided by a block and clip arrangement 7, 8 to the nip of feed rolls 4, 4<SP>1</SP> that compress it into the tube 5 into which extends a wheel 45 preferably provided with teeth and constituting the impeding force. One manner of providing the necessary braking force to the wheel 45 is to pass a belt 29 around a part of the wheel 45 and around a stationary sheave 28. The shaft of wheel 45 may be provided with vanes. Instead of the wheel 45. one or more chains may be employed. The front or a side wall of the tube 5 may be of glass or transparent plastic.
