830,388. Liquefied gaseous fuelled lighters. RONSON PRODUCTS Ltd. Jan. 2, 1958 [Jan. 29, 1957], No. 3186/57. Class 75(3) A burner valve for compressed gaseous fuels comprises two members 1, 2 between which a wick 15, supplied with fuel in a liquid form, is compressed so as to provide a continuous compression zone 14 between the two members 1, 2, one of the members having an aperture 13 located in the compression zone, a valve 20, 21 controlling the fluid flow through the aperture 13, an adjusting member 5 for moving- the apertured member 2 relative to the member 1 and a lost motion device 22, 23 between the members 5 and 2 for varying the degree of compression applied to the wick 15 within fine limits. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the apertured member 2 is fitted within the burner nozzle 4. The lost motion device is located between the underside of the adjusting member 5 and a flange 24 on the burner nozzle 4 and comprises a rubber, fabric or steel splitring washer 22 bearing against one face of a ball-race 23. The initial compression of the wick 15 is effected by the member 5 and thereafter an adjusting wheel 8 is placed over and engaged by splines 7 on the member 5 and held in position by a retaining clip 10. Further compression adjustment is effected by rotating the wheel 8 or by removing the wheel 8 and rotating the member 5. Rotation of the wheel 8 is limited by a stop 28 engaging one or other side of the lighter casing, Fig. 2 (not shown). The wick 15 is held on the flat-faced member 1 by a ring 18. In a modification shown in Fig. 3 the burner nozzle 4 is formed on the adjusting member 5 and the apertured member 2 is extended upwards to engage the member 5. The apertured member 2 is provided with the flange 24 which carries the lost motion device 22, 23, which, in this case, has two resilient washers 22. The wick 15 is held against a ball 32 or similar spherical surface. A helical spring may be arranged behind or around the ball 32. A resilient washer 30 may also be provided between the flange 24 and a valve housing 3. Specification 683,734 is referred to.
