967,955. Gas lighters. K. ICHIKAWA, and K. IKEDA. Aug. 18, 1961 [Feb. 28, 1961; May 8, 1961 (2)], No. 29909/61. Heading F4F. A cigarette ligher using liquefied gas or fuel comprises a fuel tank a from which gas passes through a hole 1 in a valve cylinder b, a hole 2<SP>1</SP> in a block 2 of resilient material and an axial passage 3 in an adjustable valve member c to a nozzle 4, the member c having a screw thread mating with a screw thread in the cylinder b. The valve member c is turned by an operating ring d which has teeth or splines 7 mating with teeth 5 on the member c, the teeth being held in engagement by a spring 9 in a recess 6 of the operating ring reacting against a washer 11 which is held in place by a clip 10 on the valve member c. As the valve member is turned by the operating ring, the block 2 is compressed or decompressed, thus varying the diameter of the hole 2<SP>1</SP> and the rate of flow of gas to the nozzle 4. The operating ring has a projection 8 which by engagement with two sides f of the lighter casing limits the range of movement of the operating ring. The ring may be lifted to disengage the teeth 5 and 7 and then lowered in a different position relative to the valve member to increase the range through which the latter may be turned. In a modification, Fig. 8, the teeth are formed on the washer 11 and on the upper part of the operating ring, and a projection on the inner periphery of the washer engages a longitudinal slot in the valve member c to prevent relative rotational movement.
