Abstract
822,374. Cigarette lighters. NATIONALE S. A. Jan. 31, 1957 [Feb. 8, 1956], No. 3384/57. Class 75(3) In a lighter comprising a device for adjusting the fuel supply to the flame the device has at least two adjustment actuating members of which the first permits of a rapid adjustment and the second a fine adjustment. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 a tube 3 located in a fuel reservoir 1 containing gaseous fuel in the liquid state has screwed into one end a plug 6 to which is attached a bearing part 5. A piece of fabric 8 is mounted on the upper face of the part 5 and is clamped thereto by a part 9 provided with an orifice 10 for the supply of gas to a tube 11 slidably mounted at its lower end in the tube 3. A rod 12 slidable in the tube 11 is provided at its lower end with a fluidtight member to close the orifice 10 and is normally depressed by a spring-loaded member 13 mounted on the lighter cover 2. The rod 12 is pushed upwards, when the cover 2 is raised, by a spring 16 located in a recess in the bottom of the tube 11. A spring 18 bears at one end against a plug 6 and at the other against a slidable member 19 bearing against the part '9. A lever 21 pivotally mounted on a ball 22 and bearing at one end on a shoulder 20 formed on the tube 11 is pivoted by rotation of a screwed spindle 25 engaging a sleeve 23 to effect the fine adjustment of the pressure exerted on the fabric 8 by the parts 9 and 5. The maximum height to which the flame can be adjusted is determined by the sleeve 23 abutting a shoulder on the spindle 25 and the minimum flame height is determined by the upper end of the lever 21 contacting the tube 11. The rapid adjustment of the part 5 relative to part 9 is effected by turning the screw 6 thus allowing the fuel to enter the tube 3 through the passage 4 to clean the fabric 8. In a modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 a wick 29 is compressed between a part 9 and a screw 30 screwed into a member 31 threaded into a socket 32 attached to the inside of a fuel reservoir 33. The fine adjustment of the compression of the wick 29 is effected by a member 37 provided with left-hand threads of different pitches one thread of which engages the top of the member 31 and the other of the top of a member 36. The maximum flame height is determined by the inner face 45 of the member 37 engaging the top face of the member 31. The minimum height of the flame is determined by the force required to unscrew the member 37 which force becomes progressively greater for effecting compression of the wick 29. The rapid adjustment of the member 36 is effected by a spanner having D-shaped apertures at each end, Fig. 5 (not shown), which engage the D-shaped top of the member 36. The rapid adjustment may also be effected by rotating the screw 30 which may be made accessible from the outside of the reservoir 33 by extending the member 31- to the bottom of the reservoir 33. A spring washer 40, knurled on its periphery, between a flange 41 of the member 36 and the member 31 is provided to make it difficult to rotate members 36 and 31 relative to one another. Other types of reducing means may be used such as a worm, a combination of levers or planetary gears. The device may also be applied to petrol lighters.
