Class 120(2) [Also in Group XXXIV] In a brake arrangement for a spinning or twisting spindle, a brake member is mounted in a housing upon the inside of a hinged or removable cover and is operated by an element disposed upon the outside of the cover. In one embodiment, Figs. 1, 2, a brake shoe 4 is mounted on a brake arm 3 pivoted at 2 on the underside of a hinged casing 1 and can be moved, against 'the action of a tension spring 5, into braking contact with the spindle whorl 9 by movement of a short lever 6 secured to a shaft 7 rotatable by an operating handle 8 located outside casing 1. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, transmission of braking force to the spindle bearing is avoided by using two brake shoes 28, 29 carried by pivoted arms 23,.24 and pressed into engagement with opposite sides of the spindle whorl by a W-shaped spring 22. Arms 23, 24 are normally held apart by means of a cam 25 which can be rotated by an operating handle 32 to permit the arms to move to braking position. In a modification, two-armed brake levers are used; the levers are urged apart by a compression spring and can be forced to braking position by movement of the cam. In a further embodiment, Fig. 10, brake shoes 107 are removably secured on the ends of arms 101<SP>1</SP>, 101<SP>11</SP> of a W-shaped spring. The arms are held apart by a cam 102 connected by a stud to a plate 111 outside the cover 100. An operating handle 103 terminates in a ball joint in a caplike member 105 fixed to plate 111. To apply a spindle brake, handle 103 is lifted, pivoting at the ball joint about a horizontal axis, and swung over the adjacent handle about a vertical axis so as to move cam 102 to a position in which arms 101<SP>1</SP>, 101<SP>11</SP> are released to apply braking pressure. Instead of using a ball joint, the handle may be pivoted to plate 111 by a horizontal pivot.
