Abstract

A fabric comprises a web of fibres bonded by (1) a non-ionic binder consisting of a copolymer of vinyl acetate and an alkyl acrylate and/or an alkyl methacrylate, said binder comprising at least 50% of vinyl acetate, based on the total weight of the monomers, and the alkyl acrylates or methacrylates having less than 9 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups, and (2) no more than 0.4%, by weight of the dry fabric, of a quaternary ammonium bactericide having either (a) the general formula <FORM:0830139/IV(c)/1> where R1 is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, aromatic, mixed aliphatic-aromatic hydrocarbon or heterogeneous radical containing 8-18 carbon atoms or a radical of the formula <FORM:0830139/IV(c)/2> where R4 is an alkyl radical having 8-18 carbon atoms, each R2 is either a methyl or ethyl radical and R3 is a methyl, ethyl, allyl or benzyl radical, or (b) the formula <FORM:0830139/IV(c)/3> where R5 is an alkyl or aliphatic radical containing 8-18 carbon atoms, and where An-is an anion.
