Abstract

[Also in Division A5] A laminar structure useful as or for making articles for absorbing liquid body discharges, e.g. sanitary napkins, bandages, diapers or dress shields, comprises an absorbent non-woven web 2 of cellulose fibres, a moisture-permeable layer of aligned staple fibres attached to and covering one surface of said web and a moisture-impermeable film 15 attached to and covering the other surface of said web, said structure having channels 18 in the face comprising the layer of aligned staple fibres, which channels extend into web 2, run across the direction in which the staple fibres are aligned and are spaced apart by less than the average length of the staple fibres each of which is thus distorted by at least one of the channels, the bottom of each channel containing a thermoplastic resin which permeates adjacent fibres of said non-woven web, and thereby attaches the layer of aligned staple fibres to said web and which is insoluble in water at the pH of the body liquid to be absorbed but soluble in water at higher or lower pH values. The non-woven web may be made from wood pulp or cotton linters and may be formed by carding, garnetting or dry deposition. The staple fibres may be of rayon, cotton, cellulose acetate or mixtures thereof. Specified thermoplastic resins are copolymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alkyl acrylate, e.g. methyl methacrylate, polymeric carboxy ester lactones, styrene-monoethyl maleate copolymers, poly- N,N<SP>1</SP>-diethyl acrylamide and copolymers of an aminoacrylate, e.g. dimethylaminomethacrylate with an alkyl acrylate, e.g. ethyl acrylate. The film may be made by casting one of the above resins. The channels, which may be made by cameo or intaglio printing rollers, may be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the direction of the aligned staple fibres; alternatively, the channels may form a criss-cross pattern. The structure may be made by joining layer 1 to layer 2 in the nip between rubbersurfaced roller 6 and cameo roller 4 having projections 5 jutting therefrom in a regularly spaced pattern, said cameo roller being fed with resin solution by roller 8, drying the product in oven 10 and bonding it in the nip of rollers 11 and 12 to a film 15 coated with resin solution 19
