Abstract
A lubricant or slushing compound comprises a hydrocarbon oil and a rush-inhibiting substance which is quinoline or an alkyl-substituted quinoline which is not substituted on the nitrogen atom. The composition may contain additional ingredients such as organic acids, soaps, sulphonates, sulphonic acids, metallic salts of organic acids (e.g. thiophosphates), phenates, thiophenates, phenolic antioxidants and other nitrogenous bases. In the examples, a slushing compound is described consisting of mineral oil and (1) white spirit, quinoline, lauric acid and zinc resinate; and textile or cutting oils are described consisting of mineral oil and (2) quinoline, polyoxyethylene glycol oleate and polyoxyethylene glycol phenyl ether; or (3) quinoline, sodium or potassium resin soaps, sodium or potassium tall oil soaps, cresylic acid, pine oil, sodium carbonate, sodium petroleum sulphonates and water. According to the Provisional Specification, other rustinhibiting heterocyclic nitrogen compounds may be employed, pyridine and substituted pyridines being mentioned.
