Abstract
A cleansing or polishing composition for metals comprises (a) 25-80% of an aqueous solution of a di- or tri-hydric alcohol; (b) up to 20% of an acidic agent; (c) 1-10% of thiocarbamide; and (d) up to 73% of an abrasive, especially 40-55% of precipitated barium sulphate of particle size below 1m . Component (a) is preferably glycerol and the total glycerol content of the composition may be 10-35%; ethylene glycol, however, may also be used. Component (b) may be sulphuric acid in amounts up to 2%, but is preferably an organic acid soluble in water, with a dissociation constant not above 10-1, which forms soluble salts with metallic corrosion products. Such acids are formic and acetic acids, but preferably these acids are used which form complexes with iron, cobalt, and nickel, such as oxalic, tartaric, citric or malic acid in amounts of 1-10%. The compositions may also contain 0.05-3% of a wetting agent, e.g. "Teepol" (Registered Trade Mark), methyl salicylate and methyl cellulose.
