Abstract
Liquid polyhydric alcohols are solidified by heating with wax-like or harder higher aliphatic alcohols and neutral saponaceous bodies other than soap, and allowing to cool with constant stirring. Polyhydric alcohols specified are glycerine and ethylene, butylene, and pentamethylene glycols, diluted or not with water. Higher aliphatic alcohols used include myristyl, palmityl, stearyl, docosyl, and myricyl, and technical mixtures of alcohols. The neutral saponaceous bodies may be salts of sulphuric or phosphoric esters of aliphatic alcohols, or salts of condensation products of fatty acids with protalbic or lysalbic acids, e.g. stearyl lysalbic acid. The products are neutral and are used (1) as lubricants, maybe with the addition of anti-corrosive agents; (2) as or in cosmetics or other pharmaceutical preparations. There may be added fillers, e.g. starch, agar-agar, and dimethyl-cellulose, and, where circumstances permit, substances of acid or alkaline reaction. In examples: (1) a cosmetic is obtained by melting down 9 lb. of myristyl alcohol with 90 lb. of glycerine on the water bath, and stirring in 1 lb. of sodium cetyl-sulphate and 10 lb. of starch; (2) an agent for pediculture is made by melting down 8 lb. of a technical mixture of palmityl and stearyl alcohols with 2 lb. of triethanolamine dodecylphosphate and 90 lb. of 80 per cent glycerine, and stirring in 2 lb. of salicylic acid.ALSO:Cosmetic and other pharmaceutical products consist of or contain liquid polyhydric alcohols solidified by heating with wax-like or harder higher aliphatic alcohols and neutral saponaceous bodies other than soap. There may be added fillers e.g. starch, agar-agar, or dimethyl-cellulose, and, where circumstances permit, substances of acid or alkaline reaction. Polyhydric alcohols specified are glycerine and ethylene, butylene, and pentamethylene glycols. Higher aliphatic alcohols used include myristyl, palmityl, stearyl, docosyl, and myricyl, and technical mixtures of alcohols. Suitable neutral saponaceous bodies are salts of sulphuric or phosphoric esters of aliphatic alcohols, or salts of condensation products of fatty acids with protalbic or lysalbic acids, e.g. stearyl lysalbic acid. In examples: (1) A cosmetic is obtained by melting in the water bath 9 lb. of myristyl alcohol with 90 lb. of glycerine, and stirring in 1 lb. of sodium cetyl sulphate and 10 lb. of starch; (2) An agent for pedicure is made by melting 8 lb. of a technical mixture of palmityl and stearyl alcohols with 2 lb. of triethanolamine dodecyl-phosphate and 90 lb. of 80 per cent glycerine, and stirring in 2 lb. of salicylic acid.
