823,057. Applying powder to porous tapes for storage purposes. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 10,1956 [Feb. 18, 1955; March 14, 1955], No. 4191/56. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XX] In a method of, or apparatus for, making a powder-carrying tape for use in xerographic cloud generators, a tape of porous material is moved at uniform speed through a loading zone at which an aerosol of xerographic developer powder particles is directed on to and through the tape. In Fig. 3, a tape 28, e.g. of velveteen or flannel, is led from a braked supply reel 30 around guide rollers 32-36 and under a rotary brush 40 which raises the nap and then over a slot 39 in a cylinder 37 to a driven feeding roller 38 from which it passes to a take-up reel 31. Powder 26 is fed to the surface of a rotary grooved disc 16, levelled by a metering blade 17 and sucked into an aerating tube 18 by compressed gas supplied through a pipe 20. The gas stream conveys the aerosol thus formed into the interior of the cylinder 37 and directs it through the slot 39 so that the particles of powder are picked up by the tape. Surplus particles passing through the tape are withdrawn by an exhaust duct 41. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the brush 40 and duct 41 are omitted and the cylinder is formed with several slots.
