In an apparatus for marking a defective article 231 supported on a conveyer 22, an inked felt roller 1 is moved into engagement with the article by an electromagnet 20 controlled by a photo-cell which examines the articles 23, 23<1> at a station 21 before they reach the marking station. The roller 1 and ink trough 5 are carried by a lever 3 which is controlled by a spring 18 and is vertically adjustable.
