Abstract
822,003. Gun mountings. WEBSTER, T.H. Sept. 26, 1955 [Oct. 15, 1954], No. 29715/54. Class 92 Relates to a gun mounting designed to correct the out of balance produced by the gun during its time of recoil and run out. According to the invention for guns firing at small angles of elevation the trunnion axis is positioned above the centre of gravity of the recoiling parts at such a distance x, Fig. 19, that the pull of recoil and subsequent run out forces produce a couple about the trunnion axis tending to depress the gun muzzle in opposition and approximately equal to the couple about the trunnion axis produced by recoiling parts as they slide' rearward in recoil and tending to elevate the gun muzzle. For guns firing at angles of elevation greater than about 20-25 degrees a different arrangement is necessary. In this -case each trunnion pin 1, Fig. 14, is secured to the cradle 2 and carries a toothed arc sector 3 of radius x, Fig. 13, which meshes with a toothed arc 4 on the underside of the trunnion cap 5. The bearing part 6 of each trunnion is carried at the upper end of a link 7 pivoted on a pin 8 on the side of the carriage cheek 9. As the gun elevates or depresses the toothed arc sector 3 moves forwards or rearwards. The pitch line of the teeth of each sector 3 are arranged at the distance x in relation to the trunnion axis so that equal and opposite couples are set up during recoil and run out. Fig. 17 shows how the gun is elevated when this recoil balancing device is used and when power elevating is necessary. An elevating arc 10 is pivoted on a cross shaft 17 in bearings 11 on the carriage cheeks 9, the axis of this pivot being a suitable distance from the trunnion axis 1. The arc 10 is moved in elevation by a power-operated pinion 12 and actuates the gun by links 13, the upper end of each link being carried on a pin 14 secured to the gun casing 2 while the lower end is secured to the arc 10 by a pin 16.
