Abstract

820,250. Arc-rupturing in switches. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D' ELECTRICITE. Sept. 10, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956; June 7, 1957], No. 28531/57. Class 38 (5). In an arc-chute having de-ionizing plates mounted transverse to the direction of arc travel, pairs of adjacent plates are electrically connected and adjoining plate pairs are electrically insulated so as to break the arc into sections. Fig. 4 shows a pair of plates formed from a single sheet of magnetic material and electrically connected by the web c, b, h, f. Adjoining pairs of plates are arranged in the arc-chute with their webs abutting alternate side panels 13, 14, as shown in plan in Fig. 3. Alternatively the plate pairs may be formed by separate plates 41 which are bent, as shown in Fig. 6, and joined along their edges 43. One of the bent plates may be replaced by a plane plate. A pair of plane plates joined by conducting cross-braces may also be used, Fig. 8 (not shown). Additional cooling plates may also be provided within the plate pairs.
