Abstract
819,348. Switchgear structures. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. Aug. 24, 1956 [May 24, 1955], No. 14980/55. Class 38 (5). Switchgear with a withdrawable circuitbreaker, particularly of the flameproof type, is provided with an isolator between the breaker and the fixed part so that live contacts are not exposed when the breaker is removed. The circuit-breaker 2 has plug contacts 9, 10 which can engage socket contacts 21 in insulators 20 in a wall 15 in the isolator enclosure 13. The contacts 21 engage sliding contacts 25 which can be moved by a carrier 22 so that their ends 27 engage contacts 5, 6 in the fixed part 1. The carrier 22 is moved by an arm 28 on an operating shaft 30 whose mechanism (not shown) can be interlocked with the breaker. Flanges at 11, 12 can be machined for flameproof coupling. In Fig. 2 the isolator comprises blades 70, 71 engageable either directly with contacts 5, 6 or, as shown, with fixed contacts 73 taken through insulators 74 in a wall 75 to contacts 27. Additional contacts 76 can be provided for earthing the breaker. In Fig. 3 (not shown), a cable earthing device is inserted between the breaker and isolator. The earthing device contact which mates with breaker contact 10 has a plug-and-socket connection direct to earth.
