Abstract

Molten substantially linear polyethylene or an isotactic higher poly-a -olefine is extruded through a spinneret, and the resulting filamentary products are cooled by contacting with an aqueous emulsion of a mineral oil, and then stretched and wound up. The mineral oil may be a light petroleum oil, and the emulsion may also contain a vegetable oil or an oily derivative thereof, e.g. colza or olive oil, or an oily oxidadation or sulphonation product thereof. In an example substantially linear polyethylene is melt-spun at 362 DEG C. into filaments which are cooled in an aqueous emulsion of light petroleum oil, sulphonated olive oil and triethanolamine at 15 DEG C. The filaments are then stretched ninefold and wound up.
