Abstract

817,157. Seed sowing machines. HIGGINS, W. H., HIGGINS, K. M., and HIGGINS, B. L. Aug. 8, 1956 [Aug. 9, 1955], No. 24247/56. Class 6(1). A machine for sowing seeds encased in a strip of material 16 comprises a roller 3 provided with a flanged ring 7 for forming a furrow, a spring urged wheel 15 for pressing the strip into the furrow, twin scrapers 18 to move the earth to cover the strip and a roller 4 for compacting the earth over the strip. As shown tines 6 which may be replaced by a circular coulter are mounted in front of the roller. The strip 16 is mounted on a spool 8 provided with a pawl and ratchet device 11, 12. The clicking of the ratchet is used as a signal to indicate that the spool is rotating. A tank or hopper 19 provided with a shoot 20 may be fitted to deliver fertiliser or a strip disintegrating chemical. In place of the spool 8, the strip may be folded and placed on a magazine arranged to permit the folded strip to be drawn therefrom. The flanged ring 7 is removable and may be replaced by a ring of a different size. A cutting device may be incorporated to sever the strip at the end of each row. The machine may be constructed as a multiple row unit.
