Abstract
A steel alloy suitable for hot working tools, valve seats for internal combustion engines and similar high temperature uses has a composition within the following range in per cent by weight: Cr 6.0-15.0; W 5.0-9.0; V 0-4.0; Si 0-2.0; Ta 0-2.0; Nb 0-2.0; Mo 0-3.0; Ti 0-1.0; Al 0-1.0; C 0.1-1.0; Fe and impurities the remainder.; the amount of C within the range 0.1-1.0 being related to the amounts of the other alloying constituents of the steel by the formula C=0.04 Cr+0.06 W+0.1 V+0.01 Si+ 0.06 Ta+0.09 Nb+0.04+Mo+0.25 Ti+0.02 Al minus K, K being a number in the range 0.48 to 0.72, C+K being in the range 0.6 to 1.5. In the formula the chemical symbols represent the amounts of the corresponding elements in the alloy. The steel is subjected to heat treatment by heating in the range 1000-1300 DEG C., cooling e.g. in air, and tempering in the range 500-800 DEG C. to obtain a hardness of 30-60 on the Rockwell C scale and a structure containing 5 to 50 per cent of primary ferrite. Examples of alloys in accordance with the invention are given, the examples containing Mn in proportion up to 1.1 per cent.
