Abstract

An age-hardenable austenitic alloy, suitable for use as parts of gas turbines or as valves for internal combustion engines, has a composition in per cent by weight within the following range: .C.0.55-0.65 .Mn.7.5-10.0 .Si.0.45-0.6 .Cr.21.0-22.5 .N.0.3-0.4 .Fe and impurities the balance.. To improve machinability one or both of S and Se may be present up to 0.15 in total. Impurities such as P, Cu, S, Co, Ni should not exceed 1.5 in total. The alloy may be solution treated in the range 1900-2300 DEG F. for 1/4 -8 hours, quenched and hardened in the range 1200-1600 DEG F for 1/4 -48 hours. Quenching may be replaced by air cooling in the case of thin sections.
