Abstract
A corrosion-resistant martensitic steel has a composition, in per cent by weight, within the following range: C plus N 0.03-0.12, with the total N not exceeding 0.03, Cr over 13.5 and up to 17.5, Ni 4.0-6.0, Cu 0.5-2.5, Mo 0.3-3.0, Mn 0.5-2.5, Si up to 1.00, one or more of Ti, Nb and V 0-0.2, Fe and impurities the balance. The alloy may be subjected to one of the following treatments, (1) cold rolling and heating for 1-10 minutes at a temperature in the range 700-850 DEG C., and possibly further cooling to about -10 DEG C. for about 2 hours followed by hardening at a temperature in the range 350-600 DEG C. for 1-16 hours, (2) rapid air cooling from about 1050 DEG C. to room temperature, cooling to not over -78 DEG C. for 2 hours, then heating to a temperature in the range 350-600 DEG C. for 1-16 hours, (3) rapid air cooling from about 1050 DEG C., maintaining in the range 700-800 DEG C. for 2 hours, air cooling to below 20 DEG C., e.g. 15 DEG C. for 2 hours at least and heating to a temperature in the range 350-600 DEG C. for 1-16 hours.
