Abstract

814,580. Woodworking cutters. SMITH, S. F., and GOWER, H. L. Feb. 7, 1958 [June 11, 1957], No. 18450/57. Class 145. The body 10 of a rotary woodworking cutter has one or more grooves 15 in each of which a blade 12 is held by a clamping block 16 adjustable by a screw device 20, the block and screw device being connected by self-aligning means that allow an even clamping force to be applied to the blade. The self-aligning means may comprise a pivotal connection 23 and a curved surface 24 seating on a similar surface on an extension 18 of the clamping block or a ball may fit in hemi-spherical seatings in the two parts. A screwed pin 29 and slot 28 prevent rotation of the screw device 20 and longitudinal movement of the adjusting nut 26 is prevented by a collar 27. The face 30 of the blade is preferably formed with transverse grooves 31 engaging grooves 34 in a backing plate 32 held in position by a double-headed pin 36 passing loosely through a hole in an axial extension 35 of the backing plate. The blade may have additional grooves at right angles to the grooves 34 so that it may be inserted to present any one of its four edges, each of which may be formed with a cutting edge.
