Abstract
813,622. Tanks. WHESSOE Ltd. and WOODHALL, E. H. Jan. 3, 1956 [Oct. 18. 1954], No. 29974/54. Class 69 (1). A vessel of, for example, spherical or cylindrical shape designed to carry heavy internal loads has internal means supported on the shell wall of the vessel for supporting the internal load and external supporting means for the shell vertically beneath the internal means, the arrangement being such that the internal load is transmitted to the external supporting means through the shell without substantially increasing the stresses in the shell. As shown in Fig. 7 the vessel is in the form of a vertical cylinder 14 with domed ends, and internal supporting stools 7 are secured at intervals around the lower end, stiffeners 8 being welded to the end at these points. The stools are of T-section with a flat top which supports an annular ring member 4, which itself carries a network of girders 1 (see Fig. 4) of inverted T-section having their vertical webs 11 secured to the vertical part of the member 4 by fillet welds and their lower flanges 12 butt-welded to the lower flange of member 4. The tops of webs 11 are thickened at 2, and pads are provided on this thickened part bringing it to the level of flange 43 for supporting a flooring. The load on the flooring is transmitted via member 4 and stools 7 to external brackets 10 secured to the outside of the shell beneath the stools and bearing in pairs on columns 13, the construction of these brackets and columns being described fully in Specification 813,621.
