Abstract
810,166. Centrifugal pumps; gear pumps. HATHAWAY Ltd., L. March 29, 1957 [Jan. 30, 1957], No. 3235/57. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (2). The inlet of a centrifugal pump is connected to the inlet of a priming pump through a non- return valve and a float-operated valve for preventing liquid from entering the priming pump, and a thrust-transmitting means is arranged between the valves so that when one valve is seated the other valve is held off its seat whereby to prevent the development of a pressure depression between them that would hold them undesirably against their seats. The priming pump is a gear pump 26 which draws gas from the inlet of a centrifugal pump (not shown) through a duct 24, a spring-loaded non-return valve 23, a float chamber 11 and a pair of parallel pipes 13, 14. The use of two pipes 13, 14 instead of one prevents air locks. The priming pump 26 is put into operation by pulling a knob 33 to bring a valve 32 into the position shown in which it restricts a by-pass 31 connecting the inlet and outlet of the pump 26. When the priming is completed, liquid enters the float chamber 11 and lifts a float 16 to close a needle valve 17. An extension 18 on the valve 17 then engages the non-return valve 23 to prevent both valves from being closed at the same time. The priming pump 26 is filled with lubricant which circulates through the pump and by-pass 31 in both positions of valve 32, to lubricate and seal the gear teeth. A vent 35 is provided for the gas drawn from the centrifugal pump during priming.
