Abstract
810,125. Sealing split wheel rims. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Sept. 14, 1955 [Oct. 8, 1954], No. 26289/55. Class 144 (2). In a tubeless tyre and circumferentially-split wheel rim assembly wherein the rim 20 has integral and detachable bead-seat portions 22, 41 respectively which are tapered at between 5 and 20 degrees to the rim axis, the tyre beads 14, 14a being correspondingly tapered, an endless resilient sealing ring 50 is disposed between, and in contact with, the rim base 23, the tyre bead 14 and the axially inner edge of the bead seat portion 41 of the detachable bead-retaining means 40, to seal the junction of the bead 14, rim base 23 and bead seat 41 from escape of inflation air. As shown the rim 20 has integral bead seat and retaining portions 22, 21 at one edge, and a gutter 26 at the other to receive the co-operating rib 42 of the transversely split detachable bead seating and retaining ring 40. The detachable ring 40 may be in two parts comprising an endless bead-retaining flange and a split bead seat and locking ring portion. To assist in retaining the ring 50 against axial displacement from its operative position, the ring 50 may be engaged in confronting circumferential grooves formed in the underside of the bead 14 and in the rim base 23 respectively, or a metal ring 70, Fig. 6, may be welded to the base 23 to form with the axially inner edge of the detachable bead seat a recess to receive the ring 50. Alternatively the rim base 23 may have a recess extending axially inwardly from the gutter 26 to provide a shoulder axially inwardly of the edge of bead seat 41 to co-operate therewith in the same manner as the metal ring 10. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 725,767.
