Abstract

808,481. Pneumatic safety tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Nov. 1, 1955 [Nov. 18, 1954], No. 33378/54. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic safety tyre assembly comprises two tyres constructed as described in Specification 786,162 and dimensioned so that one is nested within the other, on a common wheel rim, to leave an air-space therebetween. As shown the two tyres are tubeless with the edges of the inner tyre spaced from those of the outer tyre by rubber or metal spacers 11 which may be completely separate, or may be integral with either of the two tyres and, if desired, cemented to the other. For use on aircraft, each tyre has its own separate inflation valve and when mounted on a split rim, a sealing gasket 12 is located between the rim parts for airtightness. Fig. 3 shows a split well-based rim wherein the welt base 14 is axially offset from centre and seats the edges of the inner tyre so that one sidewall thereof abuts the adjacent edge of the outer tyre. This arrangement facilitates the provision of separate inflation valves. For road vehicle use, the two tyres may intercommunicate with the inner tyre only provided with an inflation valve.
