Classes 7(3) and 7(6) In a fuel metering and distributing apparatus of the shuttle type having one or more free shuttles 9 reciprocated by fuel pressure in bores in a rotary valve 7 between a fixed stop 10 and a stop 11 adjusted by a piston 18 in accordance with intake manifold pressure, the piston 18 actuates an endwise movable bar 16 which adjusts the stops 11 through an abutment 14, the bar 16 being supported at one end 23 by a pivoted abutment 24 which is moved sideways by a bi-metallic strip 26 at cold starting, enabling the bar 16 to move sideways to a position in which the stops 11 can move to a position beyond the normal maximum supply position to supply excess fuel for starting. The normal position of the abutment 24 is determined by engagement of a pin 32 on its lower end with a stop 33 adjustable by a bellows 35 responsive to atmospheric pressure. The upper end of the bi-metallic strip 26 is attached to an adjustable pin 28 and its inner end is attached to the pivot 25 of the abutment 24 and also to the stem 31, Fig. 2, of a valve 40 controlling the supply of heated air into the chamber 27 from a pipe 30 connected to an exhaust heated interchanger. The valve 40 is open when the engine is cold and closes as it warms up. Alternatively the chamber 27 may be heated by an electric heater.
