Abstract
658,254. Regulating; two-stroke engines. AMERICAN BOSCH CORPORATION. Oct. 31, 1947, No. 29091. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1946. [Classes 7(ii) and 7(vi)] The air pressure in the engine cylinder at a point in the compression stroke is used to control the fuel air ratio. A fuel injection pump may be controlled manually and the air supply be controlled automatically or vice versa. As shown a twostroke cycle engine 1 includes a valve 7, which may be a rotary valve, as shown, or of other suitable type such as a poppet, piston or sleeve valve. The valve is operatively connected to the crank shaft or other suitable portion of the engine whereby it is opened for a determined time to connect the engine cylinder 1a during the compression stroke to a space 29 in a mixture control mechanism 2. The mechanism 2 varies the fuel-air ratio according to the pressure transmitted to the space 29, a diaphragm 28 carrying a rod 27 being interconnected through linkages described below with a pair of air throttle valves 11 and a fuel pump control shaft 19. The throttle valves 11 are carried by a shaft 12 having an arm 13 connected by a link 14 with a lever 15. The. lever 15 is pivoted at 16 to a lever 24 which turns about bearings 25 on a cover 42. One end of the lever 24 is connected to the rod 27 of the diaphragm. An end 17 of the lever 15 is connected by a link 18 to a lever 23 fixed to the pump control shaft 19. A calibrated spring 32 bears at one end against a member 33 which is pivotally mounted on a lever 34 at 35. An L-shaped lever having arms 36, 37 is pivoted at 38 and the arm 37 has its free end pivotally connected to the lower end of the rod 27 at 39. The spring 32 has its opposite end engaging a member 40 which is provided with a thermostatic or bimetallic strip 41 for temperature compensation and is adapted to shorten the spring lever arm 36 with increased temperature by lowering the member 40. The fuel injection pump is manually controlled by the operator through a lever (not shown) connected to the shaft 19. The throttles are automatically controlled by the apparatus described. In a modification the throttle 'valve 11 is arranged to be manually controlled the shaft 19 being connected to the injection pump to control the fuel supply automatically. The injection pump will be controlled according to the air pressure in the engine cylinder. Various types of engines are shown as being operated by the control. The valve 7 may be used with only one cylinder of the engine or with each cylinder. An opposed piston two-stroke cycle engine is described, Fig. 8 (not shown), having opposed pistons of different diameters and fuel injection into the combustion chamber formed between the pistons. A twin-cylinder two-stroke cycle engine having opposed cylinders and crank case compression, Fig. 6 (not shown), is also described.
