Abstract
<PICT:0809048/IV (a)/1> A mat having a smooth surface similar to suede leather and provided with a pattern is formed by moulding a slab of a mixture of rubber and textile fibres having on one surface a relief pattern of limited height, and grinding that surface to remove the relief. The slab may comprise 40 per cent by weight of cotton fibres and be formed in a mould comprising an engraved base plate 1, a top plate 4, and a frame 3, which is placed in a press and heated to vulcanize the rubber. The parts in relief formed on the slab by the plate 1 are then ground away to provide a smooth surface on which, however, the pattern is still visible. The depth of the engraving of the plate 1 is preferably 0.1 to 2 mm. Alternatively the relief may be formed by a pair of calendering rollers, one of which is engraved.
