Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise (a) a water-soluble alkali metal detergent salt of an anionic organic sulphuric reaction product having in the molecule an alkyl radical of 8-18 carbon atoms and a sulphonic or sulphuric acid ester radical; (b) at least an equal weight of alkali metal polyphosphate; and (c) a suds-depressant mixture comprising (i) at least 2 saturated fatty acids having 14-31 carbon atoms of different chain length, or the alkali metal soaps thereof, or mixtures of such acids and soaps, at least 50 per cent having at least 16 carbon atoms, and (ii) at least one non-ionic compound consisting of a polyoxyalkylene group, suitably polyoxyethylene, condensed with a polyoxypropylene, with an alkylphenol containing 6-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or with the reaction product of excess propylene oxide with ethylene diamine. Anionic detergents which may be used include sodium alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, sodium coconut oil fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates, and sulphate esters of fatty alcohol condensates with ethylene oxide, but particularly sodium and potassium alkyl sulphates, especially hydrogenated tallow sulphates, and most preferably alkylbenzene sulphonates in which the alkyl group contains 9-15 carbon atoms with an average of 12. The polyphosphate is preferably sodium tripolyphosphate. Suitable fatty acid mixtures are those derived from natural sources, such as from hydrogenated fish oil, and some such commercial compositions are detailed. A preferred fatty acid mixture comprises specified amounts of myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachidic, and behenic acids. Sodium sulphate, carbonate and silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose, moisture, colouring agents, fluorescent dyes and perfume may also be incorporated in the compositions, which may be produced in powder, flake, or granular form, or as an aqueous dispersion.
