Abstract

A detergent/bleaching composition comprises the following, all percentages being by weight:-a -sulpho peroxy fatty acid sodium salt which may be prepared as described in Division C2 10-50%, sodium tripolyphosphate 30-40%, sodium silicate 3-10%, sodium sulphate 10-20%, suds booster up to 5%, optical bleaching agent up to 5%, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose up to 5%. A specific composition contains a -sulpho peroxypalmitic acid sodium salt as the bleach/detergent in 20% proportion, the other ingredients being respectively as above in the proportions 10%, 33%, 6%, 20%, 2.5%, 0.1%, 1.0% and an additional 7.4% moisture. Dyes and perfumes may also be present.ALSO:The invention comprises a -sulpho-peroxy-fatty acids of the general formula <FORM:1041417/C2/1> wherein R is an alkyl group with 8-18 C atoms, and water-soluble salts of these acids. They are prepared by the reaction of the corresponding a -sulpho fatty acid or monomethyl ester thereof with H2O2 in methane sulphonic acid medium which acts as both solvent and catalyst. Suitable cations for the water-soluble salts are Na+, K+, NH4+ or substituted NH4+. They have bleaching and detergent properties (see Division C5). Particular acids of the invention are those wherein R is lauryl, stearyl, palmityl and myristyl.
