Abstract

808,021. Tractor power-take-off mechanisms. ASTELL, G. W., and WATTS, J. July 28, 1955 [July 29, 1954; Dec. 1, 1954], Nos. 22194/54 and 34835/54. Class 79(2) [Also in Group XXI] A power-take-off arrangement for a vehicle having a rear axle comprising two half-shafts 18 driven from a differential gear (not shown), comprises an extension shaft 14 adapted to be secured to one of the shafts 18 in place of the road wheel 22, a toothed wheel 17 for the power take off, a sleeve member 80 mounted for free rotation with respect to the shaft 14 and adapted to carry the road wheel 22. In Fig. 7, an extension shaft 14 is adapted to be bolted to the end of one of the half shafts 18 leading from the differential, in place of the road wheel. The latter is then bolted to the flange 82 of a sleeve 80 carried by a sleeve 79 freely rotatable on the shaft 14. Rigid with the shaft 14 is a driving sprocket 17 and a flanged collar 78. A bolt 87 is slidably mounted in a cylindrical boss 86 formed in a lateral extension 85 of the sleeve 80. The bolt 87 may be retracted from an extended position (shown) in which it engages an aperture in the collar 78, by the action of a finger piece 88 movable in a L-shaped gate 90 against the action of a spring 92. In operation of a power take-off chain drive from a sprocket 17 to a trench digging attachment (see Group XXI) carried by the tractor, the bolt 87 is retracted out of engagement with the collar 78 so that no drive is transmitted to the road wheel 22. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the bolt 87 is replaced by a detachable bolt which passes diametrically through the sleeve 80 and the shaft 14. In the alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 4, one half shaft is divided into two portions 63a, 63b, carrying respective pinions 65, 66 adapted to engage a common pinion 68 slidable on a shaft 67. The pinion 68 is adapted to slide from the position shown into the position in dotted lines in which it is disengaged from the pinion 66 and engages a further pinion 70 on a third shaft 69. The shaft 69 is adapted to be extended to the exterior of the axle casing 60a to provide a power take-off. The pinion 68 may alternatively be adapted to engage all three pinions 65, 66 and 70, if it is desired to have provisions for forward drive of the tractor at the same time as the power takeoff is. in operation. In a further modification, a removable plate forming part of the axle housing is adapted to reveal a bevel pinion on the respective half shaft. The plate is replaced by a fitment which includes a second bevel gear which is rigid with a power take-off shaft and is adapted to engage the first bevel gear. The first bevel gear may alternatively be replaced by a sprocket or by a worm wheel.
