Abstract

700,995. Tractor driving gear. SELF-CHANGING GEAR CO., Ltd., BURNETT, S. F., and MILLER, A. A. Feb. 11, 1952 [Feb. 23, 1951], No. 4475/51. Class 79(2) [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIV] In a vehicle transmission an epicyclic reduction gear unit (see Group XXIV) is in series with a main gear unit and transmits either a direct or a reduction drive to the vehicle wheels, the reduction drive being interrupted or established by a manual or pedal controlled, hydraulically actuated brake (see Group XXXIV) in the epicyclic unit. As shown in Fig. 4 a tractor towing an agricultural implement 83 by a drawbar 84 has a power takeoff shaft 4 drivingly connected to the implement by a shaft 82. The shaft 4 is connected, either directly or througn gearing, to a suitable point in the transmission on the input side of the auxiliary gear and rotates continuously. An auxiliary gear box 1 directly coupled to the main gear box 79 has an output shaft 3 driving the tractor wheels 80. The shaft 3 may be clutched, by means of a handle 23, either directly to the input shaft of the gear box 1 or to the output member of the epicyclic auxiliary gear for reduced drive. By releasing the brake of the epicyclic gear reaction member the drive to the wheels 80 can be interrupted to allow the implement to remain stationary and perform additional work on any particular piece of ground. The auxiliary gear box may be arranged in front of the main gear box.
