Abstract
787,462. Motor vehicle driving gear. BATEY, R. L. July 20, 1955 [May 12, 1954]. No. 13831/54. Classes 79(2) and 79(5) [Also in Group XXIV] In a motor vehicle having driven front and rear wheels a differential gear DDM is slidably mounted on aligned shafts 1, 3 connected to the engine E and one pair of the wheels, respectively, whereby either the aligned shafts can be connected for drive of only one pair of wheels or all the wheels can be driven with the differential gear interposed between the front and rear wheels. As shown the output shaft 1 of a change speed gear GB has a spigotted non-driving connection with the shaft 3 in a casing C, the shaft 3 being drivingly connected to a differential gear D2 for the rear wheels of the vehicle. The sliding movement on the shafts 1, 3 of the gear DM is under the control of a manual lever (not shown) and the gear DDM comprises output members 28a, 29a and an input member 43. With the gear DDM in the position shown in Fig. 3 the shafts 1, 3 are rigidly interconnected by splines on the member 29a whereby only the rear wheels are driven. Movement of the gear DDM to the right in Fig. 3 causes the member 43 to be clutched to a splined portion 7 of the shaft 1, the splined member 29a to be connected only to a splined portion 8 of the shaft 3 and a splined portion 21 of the output member 28a to be connected to a gear 9 connected by gearing 12, 13 to a gear 14 on the shaft 16. The shaft 16 can be connected by dog clutches 17, 18 to a shaft DS1 drivingly connected to the differential gear D1 of the steerable front wheels of the vehicle and to a power take-off shaft 19. Further movement of the gear DDM to the right causes the gear 9 to be positively connected to the splined portion 7 of the shaft 1 by the member 28a and no drive to be transmitted to the vehicle rear wheels. The front wheels of the vehicle are each rotatably mounted on a stub axle 64 steeringly deflectable about the axis of a pin 66, the pin carrying a gear wheel 67 meshing with a gear 71 of the associated output shaft 69 of the gear D1 and with a gear 72 united with the wheel whereby the drive to the wheel is transmitted. Associated with each wheel is a brake 81 operated from pedals 96, 98. The pedals 96 are individual to the brakes and the pedal 98 permits simultaneous operation of all the brakes 81. The pedals 96 are carried by sleeves 89b rotatably mounted on a shaft 86 carrying the pedal 98 and projections 92 adapted to engage shoulders 93a on the sleeves.
