Abstract
809,593. Friction clutches. FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd., H. June 3, 1955 [April 9, 1954], No. 10508/54. Class 80 (2). A motor vehicle disc clutch 13 is engaged by a single central spring 41 acting between the usual presser-plate 37 and an enclosing flared tubular shaft 18 which connects the engine flywheel 12 to the crankshaft 11 through a laminated disc coupling 23. The clutch is disengaged by applying pedal - controlled hydraulic pressure to a piston 43 on the remote end of a clutch-withdrawal rod 26 passing centrally through the aligned hollow input and output shafts 35, 25 of the associated changespeed gear, to bear directly on the presserplate 37. Disengaging thrust is taken by a bearing 46 supporting the flywheel 12 in the front wall of the gear-case. Alignment of the presser-plate 37 is maintained by sliding bearing surfaces between its hub and the shafts 18, 35. The final output wheel of the changespeed gear drives an inter-axle differential gear 30 driving a front axle 17 and, through a connection 29, a rear axle. Additional one-way driving connections 31, 32 limit possible overrun of the axles as described in Specification 731,938. Specification 773,595 also is referred to.
