Abstract

806,643. Regulating gas burners. SWISS GAS STOVE CO. SOLOTHURN. Aug. 31, 1955, No. 24939/55. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XXIX] In a device for regulating the flow of a fluid discharged from a nozzle in which both a passage upstream of the nozzle and the nozzle opening are changed by two regulating members operatively connected together, the regulating members are arranged in a manner allowing play of such members transversely to the regulating movement whereby frictional resistances may be avoided. The device shown regulates the supply of gas to a burner and comprises a casing 1 having a gas inlet 3 and a nozzle 2 discharging into the mixing chamber 14 of the burner. The gas inlet 3 is controlled by a disc valve 11 and the-nozzle 2 by a needle valve 10, both valves being connected together by a rod 9 adapted to be moved axially by an angle lever 8. The latter is pivoted to the casing at 7 and one end is pivoted to the rod 9 and the other end is secured to a diaphragm 6 held between the casing and a cover 4. A regulating screw 5 is threaded into the cover 4 and has a bore with a tapered end containing a spring-urged ball 18 which abuts the diaphragm 6. Inward movement of the regulating screw 5 therefore moves the rod 9 downwardly to open the needle valve 10 and close the disc valve 11. Under a certain closing pressure of the disc valve the ball 18 lifts off its seat to prevent the disc valve from being overloaded. The needle valve 10 has a cylindrical extension 21 which engages loosely in the nozzle 2 in the intermediate positions of the needle valve. The extension 21 has an axial bore 22 opening at its inner end on the outside of the rod 9 to provide a small by-pass to the needle valve. Alternatively grooves may be provided on the seat of the needle valve or a separate nozzle may be provided. The device is arranged so that in the regulating range of the needle valve the disc valve has no regulating effect and vice versa: and the operating means is preferably arranged so that it returns automatically when released from a position corresponding to the regulating range of the disc valve either to the full open position of the needle valve or to the closed position of the disc valve. The diaphragm may be replaced by a labyrinth packing. The nozzle may be regulated by a diaphragm instead of a needle.
