Abstract

806,484. Hair curling appliances. SKELTON, W. Jan. 11, 1957 [Feb. 1, 1956], No. 3155/56. Class 131 A hair curler comprises an elongated barrel 1, on which the hair is wound, and a hairretaining clip 3 combined with a clip carrier 2 which is detachably and reversibly connected by a spigot and socket connection with one end of the barrel so that the clip can lie alongside or in line with the barrel, a spring-urged catch and a series of recesses being provided on the members of the connection to provide ratchet rotation of the barrel relatively to the carrier. An axial socket 6 in the carrier engages, from either end, on a spigot 4 projecting from the barrel, the clip functioning as a handle in the position shown in Fig. 1 and clipping the wound hair close to the scalp in the position shown in Fig. 3: A part-circular spring 10 urges a ball 7, in a radial hole 8 in the carrier, into engagement in recesses 5 in the spigot to prevent back-rotation. In modifications spigots on the carrier engage in a socket in the barrel, a spring-urged ball, or balls, is provided in the spigot to engage apertures in the socket, and the spring 10 is replaced by a rubber band.
