In a centrifugal pump, one end of the impeller vanes falls within and sweeps over an annular area concentric with the axis of rotation and normal thereto, and an annular groove in the casing substantially co-extensive with the annular area and opening opposite it is connected to a source of suction which removes vapour from between the vanes. In the submersible liquid fuel booster pump shown, the impeller vanes 53 are of helical form and are shaped to provide a frusto-conical eye 54 and to conform to the frusto-conical surface 58 of a casing insert 31. An annular groove 61 formed in the insert 31 is substantially coextensive with the annular area swept through by the narrow free ends of the blades 53, and is connected by way of a passage 66 with an annular channel 35 which in turn communicates through a duct 69 with the suction chamber 67 of a liquid-ring pump comprising an impeller 51 on the same shaft as the main impeller. Vapour separating out from the liquid fuel by centrifugal action and collecting at the free ends of the impeller blades 53 is withdrawn through the annular channel 35 by the liquidring pump and returned to the fuel tank. Preferably the passage 66 is located at from 120 to 180 degrees, say 150 degrees, upstream of the cutwater 81.
