Abstract
896,366. Centrifugal pumps. KLEIN, SCHANZLIN & BECKER A.G. Nov. 16, 1959, No. 38713/59. Class 110 (1). Cavitation bubbles formed at the inlet to a centrifugal pump impeller pass through auxiliary blades 6 instead of the main blades 5. A restriction 9 at the outlet of the blades 6 keeps the pressure at the blades 6 high enough to prevent the cavitation bubbles from collapsing (and thereby causing cavitation erosion) until they have passed into the delivery 8. In the embodiment shown, the blades 6 are united with the blades 5 radially inwardly of a partition 4, but beyond this common portion the blades 6 may be curved in the opposite direction to the blades 5 to assist in producing the required higher pressure. In a modification, the partition 4 extends radially inwardly to separate the blades 6 wholly from the blades 5. In addition to being of opposite curvature to the blades 5, the blades 6 are then preferably more numerous.
