Abstract

805,095. Metal-vapour converters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 9, 1956 [Feb. 28, 1955], No. 5898/55. Class 39(1). A graphite anode for a mercury arc rectifier is shaped as shown to assist in starting up from cold. The mass of the wall 3 is low compared with that of the central body part 1 so at high current values when the arc tends to rise up the side of the anode this wall warms up very quickly and tendency to backfire is reduced. The whole mass of the anode is lower than that of a conventional anode without an annular channel 4 so that the whole anode warms up more quickly than a conventional anode. The channel 4 also facilitates out-gassing of the anode during manufacture.
