Abstract
805,073. Hydrodynamic couplings and converters. VOITH G.m.b.H., J. M. Aug. 13, 1956 [Aug. 12, 1955], No. 24743/56. Class 69 (2). A turbo coupling or converter in which liquid is continually drained from the working chamber and returned thereto through a cooler has a cooling jacket at least partly surrounding the working chamber. As shown in Fig. 2 a liquid continually drains from the working chamber of a converter through ports 6 to a reservoir 5. A pump 4 supplies liquid through a cooler K to a jacket M of the converter and thence through pipes 11, 8 to the working chamber. The working chamber may be emptied and the jacket M discharge direct to the reservoir under the control of a valve 9. In a transmission (Fig. 3) having converters 12, 13, 14 with cooling jackets supplied in parallel by a pump 25 through a cooler K, the exhaust from the jackets is directed, through a pipe 28 and a valve 29, to the working chamber of the converter which is in operation, the working chambers of the other converters being open to exhaust through valve 29. Converter 12 is used for starting, and to increase the cooling its core chamber 36 communicates with the cooling jacket M. In a modification of the Fig. 3 embodiment, only the starting converter is formed with a cooling jacket, and liquid leaves the working chamber via the core chamber, entering the core chamber through a port formed near the converter axis. This port also serves to discharge air from the converter. In a modification of the Fig. 2 embodiment, the jacket and working chamber are supplied in parallel, the working chamber supply by-passing the cooler K.
