Abstract
799,234. Hydraulic turbo couplings. SINCLAIR, H. Jan. 4, 1957 [Jan. 18, 1956], No. 1786/56. Class 69 (2). In a turbo coupling, the filling of which is variable to vary the slip and in which liquid is continuously drained from the working circuit and returned thereto through a cooler, means are provided to increase the cooling when the degree of filling of the working circuit decreases. Liquid is continually drained from the working circuit through restricted nozzles 21 into a reservoir 11 rotatable with the input shaft and containing a non-rotatable scoop tube 15 through which liquid is returned to the working circuit via a cooler. Tube 15 is radially displaceable to vary the thickness of the ring of oil in the reservoir and thus the filling of the working circuit. Valves 30 control exit ports from the working circuit. Each valve 30 comprises a plunger 39 connected to a bellows 34 which is loaded by a spring 36 and by the centrifugal pressure of the liquid in the reservoir which communicates with the exterior of the bellows through ducts 48, 47. When the scoop tube is fully extended the working circuit is full and only a thin residual ring of oil remains in the reservoir, and the plunger 39 closes its associated port. When the tube is retracted, the increased pressure on the bellows due to the increase in thickness of the liquid ring moves the plunger 39 inwards to open the associated port so as to increase circulation of liquid through the cooler. If desired the valves 30 may be arranged so as to never fully close, and the nozzles 21 can then be eliminated.
