Abstract

572,773. Hydraulic transmission of power. SINCLAIR, H. Feb. 12, 1943, No. 2386. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] In a marine &c. power transmission system providing two alternative drives, e.g. for ahead and astern working, each including a hydraulic coupling of the kinetic type having means 57 operable by the energy of liquid in the working chamber to transfer liquid to a rotating chamber 41 in which is disposed a scoop 3, the scoops of the respective couplings 1, 2, Fig. 1 (Prov.), supply filling ducts 11 under the control of a valve 10. The scoops discharge through non-return valves 6 to a cooler 8 having the valve 10 in its outlet, and also operate ejectors 12 for filling the couplings from the sump 13. Valve-controlled byepass passages may be provided from the cooler to the inlet pipes 14. The working chamber of the astern coupling is smaller than that of the ahead. With the valve 10 set to supply one coupling, the scoops of both couplings discharge thereto until the non-effective coupling is empty. The scoops are each mounted on a fixed sleeve 42 having inlet and discharge passages. Supply from the pipe 11 passes through passage 57 and chamber 50 to the working chamber arrested by vanes 52 on a casing 37 carried by the driving member. The supply also has access through a passage 59 with the back of valves 57 and through a restricted passage 60 with the transfer chamber 41. When the supply ceases, liquid in the working chamber lifts the valves 57 and escapes to the transfer chamber. The two chambers are in constant communication through a restricted passage 61. Specifications 263,949 and 328,028, [both in Class 69 (ii)], are referred to.
