805,031. Hypodermic injection appliances. MATCHETT, A. Dec. 15, 1954 [Nov. 17, 1953; Aug. 17, 1954], Nos. 31796/53 and 23848/54. Class 81 (2). A hypodermic syringe assembly comprises a cylindrical barrel with removable end caps, which barrel, when not in use, houses a piston-rod a portion of which is screwed to the barrel, the main portion of a hypodermic needle lying within an axial bore in the piston-rod, the piston-rod being removable from the barrel and insertable behind an ampoule inserted into the barrel. When the syringe is not in use the 'barrel A<SP>1</SP> contains the plunger B which is secured by a screwthread B<SP>1</SP> to the barrel A<SP>1</SP> at one end and forms a closure cap B<SP>2</SP> for the barrel A<SP>1</SP> at that end. The hypodermic needle F is located so that a major portion of the mount G and the needle F lies within an axial bore K in the plunger B. A needle adapter H is fitted into the needle mount G and the barrel A<SP>1</SP> is closed by a cap C having a plug with provision for accommodating a hollow pointed needle of the adaptor H. To enable the device to be used, the cap C over the adaptor H is removed and the plunger B is unscrewed from the barrel A<SP>1</SP>. A cartridge-type ampoule is inserted in the barrel A<SP>1</SP> so that the needle F is pushed through the barrel A<SP>1</SP> until it projects ready for use, the plunger B being pushed out of the barrel A<SP>1</SP>. The plunger B is then placed at the other end of the barrel A<SP>1</SP> against a piston stopper X<SP>2</SP> of the ampoule. The piston stopper X<SP>2</SP> may be provided with an extension of smaller diameter which is gripped by an inturned serrated or indented flange surrounding the plunger bore K when not in use. Replacement double-ended needles may be provided, each end of each needle having removable protective covers of glass or synthetic resin. The syringe barrel is made from nylon or other translucent material which may be in alternate thick and thin longitudinal strips. According to the first Provisional Specification, the plunger may be made in two separable parts which enclose the needle, the plunger being removed from the barrel so that the needle may be fitted to the ampoule before it is inserted in the barrel.
