919,939. Hypodermic injection appliances. WILBURN, E. H. Oct. 26, 1961 [Nov. 14, 1960], No. 38330/61. Class 81 (2). In order to enable a cartridge syringe to be used for aspiration prior to injection the ampoule 56 has an end stopper 57 which fits as a piston within a socket member 26 and the latter has a double-ended needle 38, the inner end of which has a lateral, by-pass orifice 54 communicating with the lumen of the needle. In the embodiment shown the member 26 is formed in one piece with a needle cap 28, there being a weakened portion 51 so that the latter may be separated off and used as plunger rod for engaging the stopper 61 of the ampoule. After the cap has been removed in this way, the ampoule is pressed into the socket member 26 so that the point 37 passes through the diaphragm 66 and trapped air passes out through the orifice 54 and the bore of the needle. The cap 28 is then introduced into the free end of the ampoule so that the resilient terminal flange is engaged behind the bead 68 and the needle is inserted into a vein, if desired. By pulling on the cap 28, the ampoule may now be drawn back slightly and, for an intravenous injection, blood will be drawn back and will appear through the orifice 54, Thereafter, pressure on the end 47 of the plunger 28 forces the stopper 61 along the ampoule to inject the medicament. In the foregoing embodiment the cap 28 is formed with at least three longitudinal ribs, equally spaced radially around it, which serve as locating guides when the cap is inserted into the tube of the ampoule and although the flange 49 is shown as circular it may alternatively be divided into four parts to give a cross formation. It is also proposed to form the cap 28 separate from the socket member 26, the two being engaged together by conical, mating surfaces. If the device is to be used for withdrawing blood samples an evacuated ampoule is used and this also has an end stopper which acts as a piston in the socket member 26, so as to enable the device to effect a preliminary aspiration. In this case, however, the needle is not thrust through the stopper until the test for correct placing of the needle in a vein has been made.
