Abstract
803,852. Sheet-metal joints. BIANCA, E. G., and DIEBOLD, K. Feb. 5, 1957 [Feb. 8, 1956], No. 3862/57. Class 83 (4). A process for joining metal sheets by a seamlike connection is characterized by cutting out at least one-row of openings 1, 2 on each sheet 3, 4, respectively to form a series of straps 5, 6 disposed transversely to the seam between said openings, vaulting said straps out of the sheets' plane, inserting the seams of the two sheets into each other to form at least one tubular channel into which a locking-core 9 is introduced, flattening finally the complete seam by beating or pressing, simultaneously forcing the locking- core into a wave-like shape. The straps are provided with recesses 5b, 6b to provide space for the locking core after flattening the seam. In a modification the straps are wider than the openings and are vaulted alternately downwards and upwards (Fig. 6) to provide deep and shallow straps. The tubular channel consists, in this assembly, of double superposed straps each of which belongs to a different sheet and the completed seam gives a very high seam strength. A laminated locking core consisting of curved strips 20 (Fig. 7a) may be used. The connection may consist of more than one seam using several cores and the openings may be arranged obliquely to the seam.
