Abstract
1433970 Anode assemblies DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP 10 June 1974 [11 June 1973] 25680/74 Heading C7B A dimensionally-stable anode assembly, for an alkali metal chlorate or hypochlorite or diaphragmtype chlor-alkali cell, comprises at least one anode riser 12 having a pair of parallel planar metal sheets 30, 30' joined to opposite side thereof, a first end portion 32, 32 of each sheet parallel to and aligned with a second end portion 34', 34 of the other sheet, the second end portions of each sheet including a leg portion 36, 36' extending towards the other sheet and terminating in a flange portion 38, 38 joined to the first end portion of the other sheet, and an electro-conductive surface 14 e.g. an oxide coating upon each sheet e.g. of Ti. Preferably each first end portion is equi-distant from the riser and joined to the other sheet by a series of spot welds; and each sheet, preferably identical, is similarly spot welded to the riser. Preferably the riser is cylindrical comprising a Cu tube core 16 clad with a Ti cover 18 with upper and lower ends closed with welded Ti cap 20 and flange 22. The sheets are preferably foraminous, expanded or perforated Ti. The assembly is formed by positioning the pair of sheets and the riser in the relative relationship, with rigid platen members placed within the assembly to extend between the planar extents of the sheets and leg portions and riser, clamping the assembly between rigid planar external platens positioned to leave exposed those portions to be joined, then joining the sheets to the riser and the end portions together by welding. The assembling is effected using a clamping platen assembly Fig. 4 (not shown) comprising lower intermediate and upper platen units (50, 56, 62) each comprising two platen members (52, 54; 58, 60; 64, 66).
