Abstract

In order to secure the uniform combustion of the fuel over the whole area of a furnace gate, air for combustion is supplied through a duct disposed beneath the grate and comprising side and end walls 12, 13 and 25, Fig. 1, respectively and walls 19, 20 defining a central wedgeshaped space A, Fig. 3, and an outer space B. The air is admitted at the apertures 14, 15 in the walls 12, 13 and flows through channels formed by curved plates 16, 17, 18 into the space A from which the bulk of the air flows up through the fuel bed, while a part controlled by pivoted vanes 19a, 20a on the walls 19, 20 is admitted to the space B from which it also rises up through the bed. The duet is formed with a fixed cover plate 27 at one end and an adjustable cover plate at the other.
