Abstract
A process for the production of spheroidal graphite cast iron in which a stream of calcium carbide is injected to produce a minimum sulphur content higher than 0.01 per cent and a spheroidizing agent is added together with an innoculant, is characterized by the addition to the melt of a metal or alloy deoxidizing agent prior to the injection of the calcium carbide to reduce the sulphur content to less than 0.01 per cent, and the addition of spheroidizing agent in amount to provide less than 0.01 per cent residual spheroidizing agent in the metal. The deoxidizing agent may be an alloy of calcium-silicon or aluminium and the amount added may be 0.1 per cent of the weight of the melt. The calcium carbide may be added in a stream of inert gas, e.g. argon, to reduce the sulphur content to between 0.005 per cent and 0.01 per cent. The spheroidizing agent may be magnesium, cerium, magnesium - ferro-silicon, misch metal, rare earth oxides, or cerium-magnesium-ferrosilicon. Specifications 630,070 and 670,245 also are referred to.
